Sunday
for Brian Henratty
Once, as I approached the age of twelve,
I was handed the weekly envelope
to be given up at Mass. Now, don't
be standing near the back. Don't leave
early and don't be home for dinner late!
I set off with the light package of change
but never made it past the chapel gate.
I missed Mass to miss the gospel's guilt range.
Beneath the bridge I peeled back the gum
and took out the coins to spend on sweets.
I ate them quickly before getting home.
In the scullery, dishes were out, the table set.
I wanted to confess but avoid disgrace.
Self-hate raged as pride smiled from her face.
